'Both Dogs and people get great rewards from living together. By bringing a dog into your home, you are bringing a true part of nature into your life. The happiest and balanced dogs are those which are exercised, trained and understand their place within our homes.'

Following the lead of the Companion Animal Welfare Council (CAWC) and co-ordinated by VETNET LLN, representatives from the major professional organisations in all branches of the dog training and behaviour therapy industry have come together to form the Animal Behaviour & Training Council. The Council is supported by all four UK governments as the body responsible for co-ordinating the much needed self-regulation of the industry and a regulatory framework is expected to be in place by September 2010.

Purpose of the Council

1.        To set, oversee and monitor standards of professional competence in the practice of behaviour therapy and training of animals.

2.        To coordinate and harmonise the activities of organisations directly engaged in the promotion of such standards within different areas of this sector.

3.        To provide information and a point of contact for other agencies more widely connected with animal welfare.

4.        To promote high quality, relevant education in the field of animal behaviour and training.

5.        To lobby for improvements in animal welfare related to behaviour and training.

6.        To promote humane practice in the training and behaviour therapy of animals.

7.        To promote ethical research into human-animal interactions, animal behaviour and psychological welfare.

The Council has identified the dog trainer and behaviour therapist roles to be formally recognised and is working on the standards of education and training required for each, including the development of National Occupational Standards with Lantra. Further details are available at www.abtcouncil.org.uk

The Council is extending invitations to professional organisations representing practitioners with other species to develop this work to suit their needs.

The Council’s aims are supported by Lantra, Defra and the Animal Welfare Departments of the Scottish Government, Welsh Assembly and Northern Ireland Assembly
