Action 4 Dogs was delighted to hold a Seminar on

Predatory Chase Behaviour

David Ryan

5  June 2010 - Edinburgh Training Centre

Predatory Behaviours in dogs are very common issues which trainers and behaviourists are constantly faced with.  It is imperative that we understand and have the expertise and the skills necessary to apply the knowledge in order to redirect, change or manage these deeply entrenched behaviours.
We also need to be aware where this type of behaviour stands in the eyes of the law.

This is a unique opportunity for trainers and keen dog owners to attend a Seminar with one of the UK’s Experts within his field. Case histories, video material and latest thoughts & findings will be presented

How to control Predatory Chasing in dogs

Many dogs are confined to a lead, re-homed, or worse, because their owners can’t stop them chasing.  It’s not their owners’ fault, they’ve spent hours out in the foulest weather shouting, yelling, pleading, cajoling and worrying. The better dog trainers tell them, “It’s a recall problem. More obedience exercises!”, and that might help for a while, but the problem is deeper than that.

You can’t deal with a long standing chase problem in isolation. Understanding why dogs chase is crucial to controlling them; knowing that they take massive brain-chemical induced enjoyment from it. Once we see chasing from the dog’s point of view it becomes easier to understand how to control them, because training a dog not to chase is not like training one to sit. This Seminar will address the reasons for the problem, the more effective solutions and how to alter the behaviour

David Ryan was a police dog handler and Home Office accredited training instructor for 26 years.  He is an accredited Clinical Animal Behaviourist and the current chair of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors.  He provides companion animal behaviour counselling services on veterinary referral and an expert witness consultancy concerning both civil and criminal litigation involving dogs.

David has appeared in the television series ‘Crimefighters’ and more recently as a guest on the BBC 4 programme “It’s only a theory”. His book "Stop!" How to control predatory chasing in dogs is now widely available.
